Six-Year-Old Electrocuted in Tarn Taran, Raising Concern Over Plastic Kite Strings

Six-Year-Old Electrocuted in Tarn Taran, Raising Concern Over Plastic Kite Strings. A tragic incident was witnessed in Tarn Taran as a six-year-old boy was electrocuted after touching a plastic kite-flying thread. The tragedy has once again brought to the fore the dangers posed by these threads, especially plastic ones that can conduct electricity when wet, dirty, or in contact with metal.

The incident has left the community shaken as residents call for stricter measures to prevent such accidents. Many have pointed out the prevalence of loose plastic kite strings entangled in electricity poles and wires, with the other end often hanging dangerously close to the ground. “It’s a ticking time bomb,” said local resident Jaswinder Singh, highlighting how these strings pose a constant threat to people commuting through streets and roads.

Though banned in official circles on the sale and use of plastic kite strings, their availability and use are common. Over the years, hundreds have been injured, and some lives lost as a result of accidental contact with such threads. Moreover, the public has been kept on tenterhooks by electric currents passing through such strings since many assume that plastic is not conductive.

Residents like shopkeeper Rajinder Kumar have long been warning about the risks but lament the lack of concrete action from authorities. “We’ve been raising this issue for years, but nothing has been done,” Kumar said, urging the government to address the problem decisively.

As the community mourns the tragic loss of the young boy, they hope that this incident will finally prompt authorities to take meaningful steps to eliminate the threat posed by plastic kite threads and prevent further tragedies.
