SGPC protests against Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’; police deployed in Amritsar

SGPC protests against Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’; police deployed in Amritsar. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) protested outside PVR Suraj Chanda Tara Cinema in Amritsar demanding a ban on Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, alleging that the film distorts Sikh history, particularly the events related to the 1984 period. Heavy police deployment was seen outside the cinema as the SGPC pressed for a ban on the film in Punjab.

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami accused the film of being “politically motivated” and aimed at defaming the Sikh community. In a letter addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Dhami demanded that the government stop the screening of the film, citing the portrayal of Sikh figures like Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as “incorrect and hurtful.”

SGPC representatives also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, requesting the immediate cancellation of the film’s screening. Dhami expressed disappointment with the Punjab government and the censor board for approving the film despite earlier objections raised after the release of its teaser.

We had protested against the teaser some time ago. No action was taken by the censor board. Now they have allowed it, and the film is going to release. If it hits the screen, we will heighten our protests. The law and order problem will be blamed on the Punjab government.” Speaking to ANI, an SGPC member.

The cinema owners in Amritsar seemed to be quite cautious. A guard at one cinema said that “The screening of the film will not take place here, though I am unsure about the exact reasons.”

The SGPC has threatened that protests will intensify if the film is not banned in Punjab. While protests have been there, the release of Emergency on January 17 has come in for sharp flak and increased the tension in the region.
