Punjab Government Steps Up Efforts to Make Tarn Taran Drug-Free. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Wednesday convened a high-level meeting with the Tarn Taran civil and police administration, local government officials, and local community leaders to discuss strategies for dealing with the drug scourge in the region.

The gathering was focused on making Tarn Taran the state’s first drug-free district. Cheema, also the chairperson of the cabinet sub-committee spearheading the state’s anti-drug drive, underlined the significance of community involvement in the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign. He went through the current de-addiction activities and asked officials to intensify their efforts.

Cheema called upon the civil administration to encourage youth participation through educational competitions, sports, cultural activities, and other programs that foster a healthier way of life. He also directed the police to initiate tough legal action against drug traffickers and confiscate assets obtained through drug proceeds.

Cabinet Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar emphasized the requirement of a grassroots movement to check drug abuse, citing effective measures in his Patti constituency that have assisted in generating public support against the scourge.

In the meantime, MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura disclosed that 80 villages in his constituency have adopted resolutions prohibiting drug sales, demonstrating an emerging community-led movement to curb the drug issue.
