Wing Commander Sunita Pahal, hailing from a small village in Haryana, has become a symbol of courage and determination after breaking stereotypes to serve in the Indian Air Force (IAF). Inspired by the 1999 Kargil War, she turned her childhood dream into reality, proving that rural roots can lead to sky‑high achievements.
Growing up in Datauli village, Sunita faced social resistance where girls were rarely encouraged to pursue careers in defense. Yet, her father’s unwavering belief in education helped her complete Computer Engineering and clear the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and SSB interview in her first attempt.
Over her 14‑year service, she rose to the rank of Wing Commander, contributing to strategic operations and mentoring young officers. Her journey stands as a beacon of empowerment for women across rural India.
“The Kargil War showed me what true service means. I wanted to be part of that courage,” she said in an interview.
