The Chandigarh Administration and security agencies have begun preparations in view of the likely visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the city on July 17. Although the Prime Minister’s Office has not yet given final approval for the programme, the administration has expedited the process of preparing a list of projects that could be inaugurated or dedicated to the public during the visit.
The list of major development projects in the city will soon be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office, following which the final itinerary will be decided. Sources said the Prime Minister’s main public event is likely to be held at the Punjab University campus in Sector 14.
PGI may get two major healthcare facilities
During the proposed visit, the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate two major healthcare facilities at PGIMER Chandigarh: the Advanced Neurosciences Centre and the Mother and Child Health Centre.
Once operational, the Advanced Neurosciences Centre will provide state of the art facilities for neurology, neurosurgery and the treatment of complex brain disorders under one roof. The facility is expected to benefit patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and several other states.
The Mother and Child Health Centre is expected to significantly enhance PGIMER’s capacity to provide treatment to pregnant women, newborns and children, further strengthening maternal and child healthcare services at the institute.
Punjab University may get a new state of the art auditorium
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to inaugurate a newly built multipurpose auditorium at the South Campus of Punjab University.
With a seating capacity of around 2,400 people, the auditorium will be among the city’s largest and most modern convention facilities. It will be used for convocation ceremonies, international academic conferences, cultural events and other large gatherings. The university administration has developed the facility keeping future requirements in mind.
Security agencies begin preliminary arrangements
In anticipation of the Prime Minister’s visit, the Chandigarh Administration, police and other security agencies have started preliminary work on route planning, security arrangements and preparations at the proposed venue.
Officials said a detailed schedule and programme will be announced once the Prime Minister’s Office grants final approval for the visit.
