नैशनल बोर्ड फॉर वाइल्ड लाइफ ने कछुआ वाइल्ड लाइफ सैंक्चुरी को डी-नोटिफाई करने का ग्रीन सिग्नल दिया है। इससे पहले करोड़ों रुपए के वाटर-वे प्रोजैक्ट में सैंक्चूरी आड़े आ रही थी।कछुआ वाइल्ड लाइफ सैंक्चुरी वाराणसी के राजघाट से रामनगर के बीच 7 किलोमीटर गंगा नदी में फैली है कछुआ वाइल्ड लाइफ सैंक्चुरी अब जल्द ही नेवाड़ा के ऊपरी जलप्रवाह क्षेत्र में 30 किलोमीटर का दायरा कहला सकता है


उत्तरप्रदेश सरकार ने वाइल्ड लाइफ इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ इंडिया से स्टडी करवाकर सैंक्चुरी की जगह में  बदलाव किया है।
स्टडी रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि कछुआ वाइल्ड लाइफ सैंक्चुरी में केवल 5 प्रजाति के कछुए ही मिले हैैं। गंगा नदी में कछुए की 13 प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं इसलिए उत्र्त्तरप्रदेश सरकार ने तर्क दिया कि कछुआ वाइल्ड लाइफ सैंक्चुरी कछुओं के संरक्षण में अहम भूमिका नहीं निभा रही है। उत्तरप्रदेश सरकार का कहना है कि कछुआ वाइल्ड लाइफ सैंक्चुरी में बहुत ज्यादा मानवीय हस्तक्षेप है, इसीलिए इस सैंक्चुरी को डी-नोटिफाई करना ही उचित है
