Government has included Domestic Rabbit in categories of Chicken, Pig, Goat, Buffalo. Now, Rabbit would also be sold in market. After the Kerela Rabbit Farming people wrote letter to ministry regarding the concern that Rabbitis served in hotels of State which is banned under FSSAI and their regular expenses are suffered. After that State and Central Government  took this initiative to make Rabbit edible.

Government in its recent gazette passed a notification where in Domestic Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) included in categories of Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011-reg. FSSAI has notified the final food safety and standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) ninth Amendment Regulation 2017.

In which the Clause (a) sub regulation 2.5.1 prescribes a list of animal species that include Ovines, Caprines, Suillines and Bovines as food animal. The said animal regulation proposes to include the domestic rabbits (Oryctalagus Cuniculus) under species of animal listedin section 2.5.1 (a) of the food safety and standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011-reg. This Order has come into action after the publication of this gazette.
