Kurukshetra is set to welcome tourists and devotees with a distinctive ambience as eight major chowks in the city will be renovated and beautified on the Mahabharata theme.
According to officials, the district administration has identified Phoenix Chowk, Panchanad Chowk, JCI Chowk, Rotary Chowk, BR Chowk, OP Jindal Chowk, the corner near Kurukshetra University Gate No. 3, and the Sector 2/3 dividing road corner for the project. Administrative approval was granted in June.
The makeover will feature statues of epic characters, depictions from the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, the Chakra, and other symbolic artworks. Two grand entry gates will also be constructed at the city’s main entry points under the Divya Nagar Yojana.
Municipal Council, Thanesar, recently presented the project report before Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister Vipul Goel. Upender Singhal, honorary secretary of the Kurukshetra Development Board, said the initiative aims to create an immersive spiritual and cultural experience for visitors.
“The Gita Dwar at Pipli Chowk is being renovated, with a new chariot replacing the old one. Entry gates at Umri, KDB Road, and near Jyotisar are also planned,” Singhal added.
Officials confirmed that decorative lighting will enhance the nighttime appearance of the chowks. The government hopes the project will strengthen Kurukshetra’s identity as a major religious tourism destination while contributing to the city’s overall beautification.
