In a major push to electric mobility, the Haryana Cabinet on Tuesday approved a 100 per cent exemption from motor vehicle tax on the registration of new battery electric vehicles priced up to ₹30 lakh (ex showroom). The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
The revised policy will benefit buyers of battery electric two wheelers, three wheelers and four wheelers purchased and registered in Haryana. Electric vehicles priced above ₹30 lakh will be eligible for a 50 per cent exemption from motor vehicle tax.
Earlier, the state offered a one time 20 per cent exemption on motor vehicle tax for battery electric vehicles. The latest decision significantly enhances the incentive to encourage the adoption of clean mobility across Haryana. The existing 20 per cent tax concession for CNG vehicles will continue unchanged.
The Cabinet also approved a 1 per cent rebate on motor vehicle tax for new non transport vehicles with an ex showroom price of up to ₹20 lakh when registered in the name of women.
The government said the revised tax structure is aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable, reducing vehicular pollution and discouraging residents from registering vehicles in neighbouring states and Union Territories to avail tax benefits.
The decision comes days after Chief Minister Saini announced that Haryana would introduce a new electric vehicle policy focused on expanding charging infrastructure and accelerating the adoption of EVs across the state.
