Gurugram woke up to a fresh red alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday, as the city braces for its third consecutive work-from-home advisory amid persistent monsoon disruptions. Despite a brief morning lull, forecasts warned of renewed thundery spells and heavy rainfall by evening.
The IMD’s Chandigarh centre placed Gurugram in the “Take Action” red zone, cautioning of waterlogging, underpass closures, and traffic snarls. The warning also extended to Charkhi Dadri, Bhiwani, Rewari, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Jind, and Panipat, while an orange “Be Prepared” alert covered central Haryana areas including Pataudi and Kosli. A yellow alert was simultaneously issued for six southern districts, including Gurugram, Faridabad, and Nuh, as the monsoon turned fully active again.
In response, the Gurugram district administration issued its third work-from-home advisory in as many days. Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, chairing the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), directed corporate offices and private institutions to allow employees to work remotely, citing 60 mm of rainfall recorded on August 7 and ongoing risks of waterlogging. Officials said the measure would ease civic repair and drainage efforts while reducing traffic congestion.
The advisory follows two earlier orders on Thursday and Friday, reflecting caution after a week of severe waterlogging complaints — including Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s convoy being caught in a traffic jam near Sheetla Mata Temple. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and cooperate with restoration work as another spell of heavy rain looms.
