Flights suspended as Middle East tensions rise, Punjabis stranded in Gulf; CM issues helpline numbers

Escalating tensions between Israel and Iraq have disrupted normal life across parts of the Middle East, leaving a large number of Punjabis stranded in different Gulf countries as flights remain suspended.

Among those affected is the family of Punjabi actor Ammy Virk. His wife and six year old daughter are currently stuck in the United Arab Emirates and are unable to return to Punjab due to flight cancellations. The actor shared his concern through a post on social media, saying that every update from the region feels personal.

He wrote that as a husband and father he is feeling emotional and stressed. Sharing a poignant moment, he said his daughter told him, “Papa, if anything happens I will hide under my bed. I am a strong girl, Papa, do not worry.” He added that these are not words any father would want to hear. Virk said that despite appearing strong in public life, at the end of the day everyone is deeply connected to their families. He said his prayers are not only for his loved ones but for all those affected, and called for peace and stability in the region.

In another case, a newly married couple from Mansa who had travelled to Dubai for their honeymoon is also stranded. Their families in Punjab are anxious and are constantly tracking developments. A principal from Bathinda has also released a video message stating that she is stuck abroad and appealed to the Government of India for evacuation.

With air travel between India and several Middle East destinations currently suspended, the Punjab government has issued helpline numbers to assist affected residents. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said he is in continuous contact with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure support for Punjabis stranded overseas.

People seeking assistance can contact 0172 2260042 and 0172 2260043. They may also reach out through WhatsApp at +91 94787 79112. The Chief Minister assured that the state government is closely monitoring the situation and extending all possible help to those in distress.
