Rs 3 Lakh in Pillow Burnt During Farmer’s Cremation in Village Paniyar Gurdaspur

Rs 3 Lakh in Pillow Burnt During Farmer’s Cremation in Village Paniyar Gurdaspur. In a bizarre incident at a cremation in Paniyar village, currency notes worth Rs 3 lakh hidden inside a pillow were reduced to ashes along with the mortal remains of 96-year-old farmer Dalbir Singh. The unexpected loss of cash left everyone at the cremation ground in shock.

As Dalbir’s son, a government employee, lit the pyre, a strong gust of wind swept through. With the body, his bedding, pillow, and other personal items were all burned according to the tradition. When relatives were doing the circumambulation of the pyre while chanting hymns, a bundle of Rs 50,000 in Rs 500 notes fell from the burning pillow onto the ground.

The sight stunned the gathering, sparking discussions about halting the cremation, but no one intervened, allowing the fire to consume the remaining money. Family members later disclosed that Dalbir had a sizeable bank balance, but they did not know that he had secretly sewn six bundles of Rs 50,000 each into his pillow.

Some relatives tried to collect whatever was left, but the cash was completely burnt. The incident sparked speculations about Dalbir’s strained relations with his family, while others pointed out that hoarding cash in bedding and pillows for emergencies was a common practice in the region.
