With continuous rainfall in the hilly regions pushing up the water levels in Punjab’s major dams, the state government has activated round-the-clock control rooms in all 23 districts as a precautionary measure.
According to a senior official, the administration is closely monitoring flood-prone and low-lying areas while ensuring real-time tracking of river and drainage levels. “Sensitive zones are under constant watch, and control rooms have been equipped to handle any situation. Each is being supervised by a junior engineer,” the official said.
As of Thursday, the water levels remain within the safe limits but continue to inch upwards. Bhakra Dam stands at 1,637.4 feet, against its maximum capacity of 1,680 feet; Pong Dam at 1,373.08 feet (maximum 1,390 feet); and Ranjit Sagar Dam at 1,694.64 feet (maximum 1,731.55 feet).
Deputy commissioners have been instructed to remain on high alert and issue timely alerts if needed. The state government has also urged the public to stay informed through official channels and not fall prey to rumours.
