The Punjab government has dismissed four employees of the Excise and Taxation Department for remaining absent from duty for prolonged periods. The action was taken under the deemed resignation rule after their absence exceeded one year. The decision was approved by the State Tax Commissioner.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the government follows a zero tolerance policy towards indiscipline and negligence in duty, stressing that attendance and accountability in public service are non negotiable.
State Tax Commissioner Jatinder Jorwal ordered the dismissal of three inspectors and one clerk. An inquiry found that one inspector had been absent from Jalandhar Two since March 15, 2023, another remained absent despite suspension since June 24, 2023, while an inspector posted in the Ropar range had not reported back since May 29, 2021 after the end of ex India leave.
