Punjab is once again in the grip of floods as continuous rainfall and release of water from dams have worsened the situation across several districts. A major incident was reported from Pathankot, where the floodgate of Madhopur Headworks collapsed on Wednesday, causing a massive gush of water into the Ravi river. The sudden breach left nearly 50 people stranded, forcing the administration to press helicopters into service for rescue operations.
Initial reports suggest that one employee is missing after the accident. According to officials, he was engaged in repair work at the damaged gate when the structure gave way under the force of water. The strong current swept him away, and despite efforts, he could not be located. The collapse has raised alarm in the region as the water level continues to rise rapidly.
The Pathankot administration immediately declared a state of alert, deploying rescue teams and coordinating with disaster management authorities. Villagers in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer places, while relief camps are being set up to provide temporary shelter. Announcements are being made, urging residents to stay away from riverbanks and to strictly follow government advisories.
Punjab has already been hit hard this season, with seven districts reeling under floods due to heavy rains and discharge of surplus water from Bhakra and Pong dams. Crops have been submerged in several regions, roads damaged, and daily life disrupted.
