Ahead of assembly polls, Punjab cuts power tariff by up to ₹1.50 per unit

In the run up to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, electricity tariffs for the financial year 2026 to 27 have been reduced across all consumer categories in the state, offering relief of ₹7,851.91 crore to power consumers.

The revised tariff order was issued by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission and will come into effect from April 1, 2026. The reduction in power tariff ranges between 50 paise and ₹1.50 per unit depending on the consumer category.

The average cost of power supply in the state has also declined from ₹7.15 per unit to ₹6.15 per unit. Officials said the fall in supply cost will not only benefit consumers but will also reduce the burden of electricity subsidy on the state government.

Under the revised tariff structure, domestic consumers will see a reduction ranging from 55 paise to ₹1.55 per unit. Commercial consumers will get relief between 50 paise and 79 paise per unit, while industrial consumers will benefit from a cut ranging from 12 paise to 75 paise per unit.

In another significant step, the tariff for electric vehicle charging stations has been reduced to ₹5 per kVAh, making it among the lowest EV charging rates in the country and aimed at promoting clean mobility.

PSERC chairman Vishwajit Khanna said cross subsidies have been maintained within the plus minus 20 per cent limit in line with the provisions of the National Tariff Policy.

Punjab assembly elections are expected next year, and the tariff reduction has come at a time when political activity in the state is beginning to intensify.
